Lobster fishing in the world’s most beautiful archipelago

Autumn has arrived and the waves were crashing up onto the square. The Captain navigates his boat out expertly in the early morning light, thinking that these are calm waters compared to his journeys over the Atlantic. Out there his chums in Fjällbacka would really get to see what harsh conditions were like, he chuckled to himself.

The pots needed to be rigged and laid on the seabed so that the hotel guests could join the Captain to harvest the black gold of the sea.

One of the high points of autumn at Stora Hotellet is when we get to enjoy the most delicious of all shellfish – lobster. The lobster premiere always falls on the first Monday after 20 September at 7am.

You can book the hotel’s lobster package every weekend after the lobster premiere and follow in the Captain’s footsteps to get your own haul of this edible treasure. You’ll go out with a local fisherman from Fjällbacka on an exciting adventure, hear stories and maybe even a secret or two about lobster fishing. Back at the hotel something to warm you up will be served.

The evening’s 5 course dinner will be lobster themed.

Arrive Friday or Saturday and stay one or two nights.

Oyster safari

The Captain was on his way to visit friends on Kalvö so he could offer his hotel guests the taste sensation that was Ostrea Edulis. The guests on the boat were in high spirits and feeling excited. For some of them it would be the first time they’d tasted oysters. The rumours about the Hardin family’s fantastic oysters were well known.
“There’s nowhere else on earth that has oysters like the ones we have here on the west coast. I know! I’ve tasted them all!” exclaims the Captain, before giving the horn a blast and coming in to land on Kalvö.

A truly memorable experience. A short boat trip to Kalvö will take you to the Hardin family, who are now the 9th generation to tend their fantastic oyster banks. The oysters grow naturally here and you’ll be able to both pick and taste one of the delicacies of the sea. Back at the hotel a beautifully presented 4 course dinner with a seafood theme will be served.

Langoustine fishing

A mirror calm sea stretched out before the Captain, who gazed out at the horizon and let his thoughts wander back to his latest trip across the Atlantic. The day dream was broken when Evert muttered that it was time to throw in the pots. They ought to get on with the fishing if there was going to be any party at Stora Hotellet that weekend.

We welcome you to join us on a trip out to sea to experience langoustines the Bohuslän way. You’ll be a member of the crew alongside a professional fisherman and get to haul up the pots of langoustines. They’ll then be cooked by the fisherman on board the boat or in his hut, and you’ll get the chance to taste freshly cooked, warm langoustines. An experience we agree with the Captain is “like tasting heaven!”

Back at the hotel a warming ‘fika’ will be served, to enjoy snuggled in one of our cosy armchairs.

Everyday luxury

During his journeys around the world the Captain treated himself to days on end of decadence and rest in the company of good friends. If we’re being completely honest his favourite way of spending them was in female company. A few of these women inspired him so greatly he named and decorated some of the rooms in their honour.

Strolling along new streets, eating well and discussing the meaning of life were the things the Captain enjoyed most. A well deserved breather before the hard work and challenges involved in a sea voyage began again.

Thomas Sjögren was just 24 when he won Chef of the Year, Sweden’s most prestigious cooking competition. In 2018 he took part in and won Swedish TV4’s popular programme, Battle of the Chefs.
